At GLAMOUR, we all want to celebrate women and their achievements – whether social, economic, cultural or political – every day of the year. But having a day dedicated to not just celebrating those achievements, but also raising awareness of gender bias and promoting equality, is something we also agree with – so we put our full weight behind it. this International Women’s Day on March 8.
There are many ways to support the day and what it stands for, like listening to and educating yourself with feminist podcasts and celebrating and uplifting the women in your life. But as we all look to freshen up our wardrobes in time for spring, one of the easiest and most effective ways to support the movement is to put your money where your beliefs are. Buying from a fashion brand owned or run by women this International Women’s Day is a great way to use your purchasing power for the collective and feminist good – while of course looking stylish.
From the high street to designers and smaller independent labels, there are countless women-owned, inspirational and sartorial fashion brands. ASOS is home to a wealth of women-owned clothing and accessories brands, all at an affordable price – take Never Fully Dressed and their standout printed dresses, for example, or We Are We Wear’s beautiful size-inclusive lingerie.
Net-A-Porter champions tons of brands founded by women like Amina Muaiddi, Khaite and Sleeper. Looking good has never been so enjoyable. Elsewhere, there are plenty of up-and-coming brands you might not even know were run by women. Take Mimi’s Jewelry, for example; founded by Amelia Hitchcock-Merritt in June 2020 as a foreclosure project, it has since been nominated as Emerging Jewelery Brand of the Year by the UK Jewelery Awards.
If you really want your buying power to be a force for good this International Women’s Day, there are also a number of our favorite women-owned independent brands giving back to celebrate the day. With proceeds going to charities that support women and girls around the world, brands like HUSH (known for their stylish and colorful clothing) and Monica Vinader (the jewelry brand everyone door) take the lead. Both brands have partnered with Women for Women International, an amazing charity that helps female survivors of war rebuild their lives, and are donating 100% of profits from this Together t-shirt and Togetherness chain necklace. So when you support one woman on this International Women’s Day, you are in fact supporting countless others.
