You Have To Be Kidding!
•   making a living   •   viewed 502 times •  7 years, 8 months ago So. work has been putting a lot pressure on me lately. It seems there are more and more demands on my personal time. I am always asked to stay longer to do "one more thing". Our management meetings are outside of our normal schedule. So if it's your day off you had to go in. The boss talked about making them optional, but that apparently was just that. Talk. I got into work today after my one day off (after an eight day stretch) to find we have a "mandatory all-store" meeting scheduled for Sunday. The Sunday right in the middle of my 3-day weekend!! What?!? Keep in mind that this is my only weekend off for another month. I'm expected to come in 2 of the 3 days??? Oh no! I informed her that I had plans to be out of town. She went in to "discuss it" with a visiting HR guy from New York. After nearly an hour she came out and told me not to worry about it, but expect to be playing catch-up for a few days... This is getting ridiculous. I mean, yeah, I am a "salaried member of management" but I DO have rights. I happen to know for a fact that if I go in on my day off and do "work" (i.e. check email, attend a meeting) I get paid a full day for that, meaning I get another day off. I haven't said a word about that. I feel that the meetings are a great thing for the business. I have had to commute for an hour on my day off three times now for these things. And now trying to get me in on Sunday? That's just too much. What kind of "quality of life" is that?

“What kind of “quality of life” is that?”

It’s not, what they’re doing is illegal as well as unethical.

Quit or tell your work to start respecting your time off, and if you have to come in for one more “mandatory” meeting on your day off you expect to be compensated with an additional day off, or else your state department of labor might be interested to hear about this violation of labor law.

I can’t speak to the legality, but it sure as hell sounds illegal and it is DEFINITELY unethical.

I work for a large corp where the standard work week is M-F, but I work Sun-Thurs. I’m NEVER told I have to come in for a meeting- I’m given a choice. And I’m thankful for that.

You deserve better, hon. A LOT better!

Yeah, it’s too much!  I’ve worked for companies like that before, but I’ve never been on the management side of it, though I had a good friend who was.  Luckily he was single at the time but it’s still pretty demanding.  Especially since summer is ending and most people want to get out and have one more outing.  They’re rude and inconsiderate for sure.

Ready to spruce up that resume yet?

That sounds horrible! And illegal! You should talk to your HR dept about that!

Hi. I'm Daniel. This is my blog. I don't update like I used to, but my awesomeness requires an actual website.
