UPDATE: It’ll be 11 years for me and Richard. Not 12. Feels like 12 tho.
Oh hai! What a surprise seeing you here! I was just thinking to myself that I hadn’t seen you in ages!
So I need your opinion, and since we go way back, I figured I could trust you. You see, recently I went to this karaoke event. It was great fun! I found myself wanting to play along too! I mean, I can sing.. right? Well in the car at least. I actually remembered this one song that I was always told I could sing pretty well. I think I mentioned it to you. Didn’t I? I know it’s been a while since we spoke. It’s a Depeche Mode song. I know he has a deep voice. I know. But really, I used to be good at singing along with that one. I did sound okay, unless my BFF Laura lied. Which could explain our not speaking since 1997.. That’s totally not the point. I want to do this karaoke thing. It looks fun, and if I can sit in front of my computer for 30 minutes recording myself talking I figured I could do this. It’s 4 minutes. Oh come on! I have even done videos of the talking thing! I think I can handle being in front of a group. If not there’s always tequila.
Shut up. You are a bitch! I don’t even know if they have the song anyways. Sheesh. Whatever. I am still going to practice it, just in case. It’s fun, and eases my commute. So there. Skeevy hoor.
So tonight I met the famous internet sensation Joelle of Tenth Muse and Moxie Design Studios. Can I just tell you how awesome she is? Like, when you read the blog and think “oh, she seems really cool” like you need to multiply that by at least ten to get the accurate cool ratio going on. Srsly. We gabbed a lot about our mutual love, the internets. We drank fancy beverages like wine, or a mandarin squish. She sang. (We were at karaoke at The Lamplighter, so that was like normal..) Anyhoo, long story, lots happened. Creepy Turkish Stalker Guy, etc. Details to follow, I am sure. I just wanted to get the recording online. Yes, I recorded.
Here’s the thing about that… Listeners to the dp.com podcast thing know that I cannot use the new iPod to record in the car. Weird. I also cannot use it to record in the chair in the bedroom. Tonight I found that I really cannot record inside of The Lamplighter either. What do all of these areas have in common? Speakers. So I have a recording of Joelle singing an amazing song, sounding perfect. The recording however, sucks. I have decided that speakers are bad with my recoding set up. Duh, right? But if you can get past the noise of it you can hear Joelle pretty well… The crowd really did go wild!
There were other great singers there too, including our own Amy. Then there were the ones with a lot of ‘personality’ and ‘presentation’ like the guy with the feather boa. I think I might become a karaoke groupie!
Seriously.. I was ENTHRALLED with the song I heard the first time I walked into The Lamplighter. It was a moment in time that I will never forget. The music pumping, the strangely beautiful lesbian shouting and clapping… the cocktails.. *sigh* I had to have that song. I remembered none of it. So tonight we went back to the bar, Betty in tow (who doesn’t even drink) to recreate the experience. I took a dollar and played four songs that *could* have been it, since I had no idea what they were. The first one was a dud. A slow jam, retro even. Ugh. I was so sad. The next song however started off strong. I had chosen Journey, Touchin’, Lovin’, Squeezin’. I was sure it was it! My song! We listened again (on the next 4 plays for a dollar) and I was positive. We also heard some G ‘n R, Carly Simon, and other random faves. But then I got the idea to buy the ring-tone! I mean if I love the song so much… so I found it and downloaded it. Hmm.
It was not the song we were enjoying. But the bartender insisted through all of our jokes about a mislabeled jukebox… that theirs was a-okay. Huh. So at home, confused, and still thinking Journey.. I googled. I iTunes’d. I am now listening to my new favorite song More Than A Feeling by BOSTON.
Damn lying jukebox. But I still love that bar. I guess you’d say that’s one of its quirks.
So first I had to work. Bright and early, well not bright, actually it is still dark as I arrive for the 6-3 shifts I am plagued with this weekend. So work, work, work… Then I went home. My husband, or maybe it was me… someone was bitchy. I changed, realized I should have showered, pouted, and then went to the couch. As I was about to drop off into a deep sleep, Richard suggested a trip to the bookstore. He is obsessed with Hillary Clinton right now and had to get a third book about her… After that we were hungry, so he decided we should go to a Mexican place I heard about on the radio. The crew on the Star morning show are always going on about the perfect night out. Dinner at Jimmy Carters and drinks at The Lamplighter. So we went to Jimmy Carters for take out, and while we waited I INSISTED on a drink at The Lamplighter. It was *just* what I wanted it to be… Old, retro cute, kinda smelly, and filled with characters. I fell in love with the place. I even took a picture, as you can see if you scroll down. Heh. As we walked in this fabulous butch looking lipstick lesbian type was belting out this great song that of course I cannot remember now… It was a perfect song for the place. She was at the bar, singing, bitching about her shots not coming fast enough. The hawt blonde bombshell bartender brought her a regular sized glass of booze and a beer chaser. Did I mention that at 5 on a Sunday afternoon it seemed to be a total drinker’s bar. They made me the strongest margarita I have had in a long time. And I think I had the only fluffy drink in the place! Apparently they do karaoke in the evenings too. Heh. I’d love to see that. Anyhoo, I was drinking my glass of booze and lime too slow so Richard went out to pick up our order. In the meantime these two guys that had come in a while ago began to discuss whether I had been with with Richard, or if I was on my own. I think it was my little comedy vogue routine I had been doing when the jukebox was blaring Tom Jones ‘It’s Not Unusual’ that had gotten their attention in the first place. Did I mention that my drink was strong? Anyway, Richard returned with the food, and we went home and watched Basic Instinct 2. That movie was so damn hot. I don’t care if it flopped. I LOVE Sharon Stone in that role.... Over played or not. It is so damn sexay! Heh. And now I am up waaaay to late for my final 6-3 shift of the 3 day weekend. Then I will sleep Tuesday, celebrate Richard’s birth on Wednesday, a day early… but the best I could do. Then… well, Butch Walker on the 13th! Hollar!! I have to try to sleep now. Gah!
